Of course, it's better without it. Yet the "closed" Vertigo (1958) ending forced on director Alfred Hitchcock by foreign censors is very moving -- pregnant with sorrow and division: imprisoning Midge and Scottie in something complex, some sense of control, some sense of the way things are at last brought back under control.
